As an entirely volunteer run organization, we rely on membership funding to continue sharing the good word of alternative living and building. All proceeds go to creating a sustainable company from funding contributors to print needs.

How often do memberships renew?
Memberships renew once a year from whenever you started signing up. For memberships associated with the print magazine, you will receive the magazine you request (current or next issue) during the yearly duration of your membership. And when your membership renews, you will get the next issue when it comes out!
I just want a magazine, why should I get a membership?
- We need to become more financially stable: this operation is currently volunteer run. In order to level up the quality of our reporting and the design of the magazine, we need to start paying ourselves. We also believe in paying our contributors competitive wages.
- It’s easier for you: our membership allows you to receive our magazine as soon as it comes out annually. Unless you cancel, you don’t have to keep tabs on our website to see if the new issue has dropped.
How is it different from your past subscription model?
Yes, this is another subscription model of sorts, but it comes with other benefits. Our last subscription model wasn’t working for us in the amount of magazines we were able to produce per year, and we were having trouble fulfilling the schedule that we had committed to. We’ve put a lot of thought into this new format, and are optimistic that it will satisfy your natural building media needs while keeping our workload realistic.
How much do memberships cost?
- Digital Memberships are $2 a month or $20 a year.
- Print Memberships are $20 a year (the same price as an individual issue).
- Digital + Print Memberships are $5 a month or $50 a year.
- Supporter Memberships are $12 a month or $100 a year.
What’s included?
There are a handful of options for membership access. We wanted everyone to be able to enjoy the membership at different price points. Our baseline membership comes with our annual magazine, digital access to our 76 issue archive, exclusive stories, our Discord community, and a special TLS gift. If that option is too expensive for you, we have a digital only membership or a print only membership. And if you’re feeling generous, we have a Supporter tier that gets your name in the magazine! Shipping is included in all membership costs.
How do I cancel or edit my membership?
To edit your membership, click the member portal button (the little person icon on the top right of The Last Straw website). There you can choose to edit your membership to a different type and rate, or cancel it.
