Privacy SBAN will not sell, trade, rent, lend, give, distribute, publicly disclose or use the information you submit by signing the petition for any purpose other than activities related to fulfilling the intent of the petition. This means, of course, that the information will be presented to the Nebraska State Historical Society and/or other entities as needed; but it also means that your information won't end up in the hands of marketing monkeys. The exception to this rule is that SBAN reserves the right to reprint your comments in whole or part, attributing them to your first name and last initial along with your general geographic location (such as City and State, or Province and Country). For anything else, we'll ask you first. Legal HR 1714 IH (S. 761), "Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act" was signed by President Clinton on June 30, 2000 and was enacted on October 1, 2000. It says, "Electronic records and electronic signatures in a form acceptable to the parties should not be denied legal validity on the ground that they are not in writing... The term 'electronic record' means a writing, document, or other record created, stored, generated, received, or communicated by electronic means." An article dated January 1, 2001 titled "Electronic Signatures (ESIGN) at Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P." posted to http://www.rkmc.com/lawyers/electronic_signatures_resource.htm on the website of Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P. states: "ESIGN defines an 'electronic signature' as 'an electronic sound, symbol, or process, attached to or logically associated with a contract or other record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record.' ... Thus, an 'electronic signature' can come in many forms, including PIN numbers, passwords, or even clicking an icon. The definition of 'electronic signature' is vague... [it] may cause problems if [an entity is] not clear on what constitutes their form of electronic signature..." We ask you to submit your name, complete mailing address, and email address on the petition as a set of unique identifiers ensuring that you are indeed an actual individual exercising a specific choice. We're being so darned anal because we feel this is so darned important: we don't want any signatures given in good faith and purposeful intent to be thrown out because of the cyber-equivalent of a dimpled chad. Under just about any other circumstance, we would encourage you to assert your individuality just about any other way. By filling in the required fields and clicking the "Sign the petition" button at the bottom of the petition form, you're providing proof of identity, creating an electronic signature that's uniquely yours, and unequivocally indicating your support of the Strawbale Heritage Preservation initiative. For additional reassurance, please also read our Privacy Statement. Thanks for you understanding and patience - and most of all, your help! |
