BUILDING WITH SALVAGE AND INDIGENOUS MATERIALS
by Carl Schreiner, Schreiner Construction Company, Eagle, Nebraska

As an active member of SBAN as well as The Lincoln Green Building Group, I was pleased to take part in the recent straw bale conference. Sharing information with participants reaffirms our common interest and compassion for earth-friendly lifestyles.

My focus dealt in part with the use of low-impact indigenous materials such as cottonwood and cedar, stone and earthen materials, agricultural products, as well as salvaged items. Keeping ourselves in tune with our natural surroundings can only help keep us in touch with ourselves and others.

Editors's Note: Carl lives in a small three-story house which he constructed from salvaged and indigenous materials, an excellent demonstration of compact and efficient use of space. He constructed a horse barn from green cottonwood, helped build a straw bale guest house near Denton, Nebraska; has built many different types of structures in Hawaii and other locales.

Carl can be reached at 19818 Van Dorn, Eagle, NE 68347, Ph. 402.781.2491
